Several months after the Democrats’ trillion-dollar “stimulus” spending bill was enacted, hundreds of thousands of Ohioans are out of work, the state is facing a gaping budget deficit and crippling “unfunded mandates,” and now taxpayers are footing the bill for ACORN’s legal fees.
Democrats have also pushed through Congress their “cap and trade” national energy tax and a costly government takeover of health care, both of which would raises costs on families and small businesses and destroy jobs.
So what are the Democrats in Washington planning for us next? You guessed it: even more government spending!
According to the Washington Times, “[m]ore federal spending to generate jobs is a likely subject at” tomorrow’s so-called “jobs summit” hosted by the president. But the Columbus Dispatch argues that yet another “stimulus” spending bill could either “be a do-nothing measure … or it could make things worse”:
“This plan follows a $787 billion bill in February that was intended to create jobs and get the economy trucking again. Nine months later, 3 million more jobs have been lost, 10.2 percent of Americans are unemployed and 17.5 percent are underemployed, meaning they either gave up looking for work or they reluctantly took a part-time job to squeak by. “This less-than-stimulating stimulus adds the better part of another $1 trillion to the U.S. deficit and national debt. ... “Business people and investors need stability and predictability in the economy, so that they can make long-term plans for economic growth with a reasonable expectation that conditions won't change overnight and undercut their investments. “Having the government intervene in the economy every few months with massive spending programs or takeovers creates the opposite of stability and predictability; it creates uncertainty that slows or paralyzes private-sector decision-making, and this prolongs economic stagnation.”Instead of promoting more government spending at a time of record deficits, Congressional Quarterly reports that Congressman Boehner, “a fierce critic of Obama’s economic policies,” is hosting an economic roundtable to counter the president’s summit which will highlight GOP solutions for helping small businesses create new jobs. According to CQ:
“The Ohio Republican says the $787 billion economic stimulus package enacted early this year has been a costly fizzle that failed in its goal of preventing unemployment from rising above 8 percent. He also criticizes Democrats’ cap-and-trade climate change legislation as a big jobs killer and argues that the House-passed health care overhaul bill would impose new taxes on small businesses just as they are struggling to recover from the deepest recession in years.”Click to learn more about Republican proposals for helping small businesses create new jobs, lowering energy costs and expanding American energy production, and lowering health care costs.
